Export Penalties About To Increase

The Bureau of Industry and Security announced its plan to increase export penalties.  It seems that the Bush Administration is trying to work with Congress to reauthorize the long moribund Export Administration Act (EAA).  The BIS claims that it needs these increased penalties to get the attention of exporters.  The  export penalties increased fivefold last year, from a minimum $11,000 per violation to $50,000 per violation.  BIS now wants to increase that amount ten times, so that the minimum penalty would be $500,000.  For more information on BIS please see http://www.bis.doc.gov/licensing/exportingbasics.htm
