Ambassador’s Roundtable Discussion

Trade Opportunities with Hungary

Friday, October 8, 2004
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

The Maine International Trade Center (MITC) and the U.S. Department of Commerce are pleased to host an Ambassador’s Roundtable Discussion featuring the Honorable George Herbert Walker III, U.S. Ambassador to Hungary. This roundtable session will include an overview of the Hungarian economy, a discussion of market drivers and opportunities, and trade benefits associated with Hungary’s recent entry to the European Union.

Join us for this unique forum to explore potential trade opportunities in Hungary.

Recently joining the European Union, Hungary has embraced market economy concepts, established necessary legal structures, and implemented privatization.  Strategically located in the middle of Europe, Hungary is a relatively advanced but low-cost country, with reduced tariffs that now average 4%. Last year, U.S. exports to Hungary jumped 25% to $1.8 billion, and this spring they continued to rise at a rate of over 20% annualized.

The U.S. Commercial Service has identified the following industries as especially good prospects in the current market: computers, pharmaceuticals, automotive parts, energy sector equipment, pollution control equipment, construction and engineering services, scientific measuring and testing equipment, healthcare technology, and security equipment.
