International Trade Specialist

Internships at the Maine International Trade Center provide qualified university students with practical experience researching international markets and providing technical assistance to Maine companies.

BENEFITS of a MITC INTERNSHIP:

  • Academic credit: Students typically receive academic credit for MITC internships.

  • Experience: Solid, practical work experience researching international markets in professional environment.

  • Contact: MITC Research Assistants have the opportunity to work directly with Maine companies under proper supervision. Research Assistants are encouraged to go on company visits and client calls when appropriate.

  • Perspective: Assisting Maine companies with their export or import-related questions offer students a unique window into the myriad challenges of international business.

  • In-Depth Analysis: Possibility of long-term assignment to course-specific, country-specific or industry-specific projects, including biotechnology, environmental technology, secondary wood products, and composite materials, consumer goods and food, and software/IT.

  • Access to MITC events, receptions and seminars; Access to events and seminars hosted by federal and state agencies and other non-profit organizations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The daily tasks performed by an intern at MITC include:

  • Fielding technical assistance queries from MITC clients in business and industry

  • Determining product classifications, industry codes, tariff rates and taxes for imported and exported goods.

  • Researching ‘best markets’ for products

  • Sourcing materials internationally

  • Researching industry and product-specific trade leads

  • Locating appropriate Market Research Reports using the National Trade Databank and the International Trade Data Network

  • Locating country-specific trade regulations

  • Researching trade statistics

  3. A copy of your grades (It need not be an *official* transcript – a printout or from your academic department will suffice.).
