2007 International Trade and Investment Awards

 

Companies to be receive awards from Governor Baldacci at

Maine International Trade Day on May 31

 

PORTLAND - The Maine International Trade Center is pleased to announce the winners of the 2007 International Trade Awards.  Recipients are businesses or individuals who have demonstrated outstanding success in international trade, and are given in the following categories: Exporter of the Year, Service Provider of the Year, Innovator of the Year, and Foreign Direct Investor of the Year. 

 

The awards will be handed out by Governor John E. Baldacci at the 27th Annual Maine International Trade Day, which this year will be Thursday, May 31 at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.

 

Exporter of the Year for 2007 is Oak Island Seafood Inc.  Established in 1995, Oak Island Seafood is a scallop processing company located in Rockland that services the domestic, European and Asian markets.  The company has state of the art freezing and processing equipment and services primarily fresh and frozen scallops to distributors and retailers around the world.  The company has also introduced new lines of Maine seafood products such as frozen coldwater shrimp and clams to international markets.  Jay Trenholm, sole principal of the company, has over 25 years experience in the seafood business, including lobsters, sardines, groundfish, and shrimp. 

 

The 2007 Service Provider of the Year is Diversified Business Communications of Portland. Diversified Business Communications strengthens business communities through event and media management. Based in Portland with divisions in Australia, Canada and the UK, Diversified produces over 100 events and publications in diverse industries. The company also operates the world's largest seafood show, the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels. Diversified Business Communications' parent company, Diversified Communications, was founded in 1949 by former Governor Horace A. Hildreth.

 

The 2007 International Innovator of the Year is Trillium Diagnostics, LLC of Brewer, Maine. Trillium was established in 1996 and develops innovative medical diagnostics for laboratory hematology based upon the research of company founder and President Dr. Bruce H. Davis.  Trillium develops and manufactures in vitro diagnostic tests for the detection of infection or sepsis, fetomaternal hemorrhage, and red cell identification, which are distributed to the U.S., Canada, the European Union, Israel, Australia, China, Japan, Korea, and Brazil.

 

Britain-based Tate & Lyle, with corporate headquarters in London and American headquarters in Decatur, Illinois, is Maine’s Foreign Investor of the Year for 2007. Tate & Lyle is a world-leading manufacturer of renewable food and industrial ingredients made from corn, tapioca, potato, wheat, and sugar. The company's Maine production facility is located in Houlton. It is a key supplier of nearly fifty food and industrial starches that are sold throughout the United States and the world, including Europe, Japan, and Argentina.
