Quick Facts:
On May 1, 2004, the European Union expanded to
include 10 new member states. The combined 25 member states are
subject to a single set of trade rules and a single tariff.
The EU-25 market comprises over 450 million
citizens, and accounts for more than 25% of the world's GDP.
Maine exporters to the 10 new EU member states
will now benefit from higher regulatory standards, increased
protection of intellectual property rights, greater access to
government procurement markets, and a substantial overall
reduction in customs duties.
