hosted by the Maine International Trade Center
teaches importers: tools of the trade, sourcing efficiently, logistics
and legal and business essentials of importing.
Topics to be covered include import terms of purchase, financing
options, qualifying potential suppliers, preparing product and paperwork
for customs as well as avoiding risk, litigation and criminal exposure.

Sub-Saharan Countries Certified for U.S. Tariff Preferences.
On January 4, the White House announced that 38 Sub-Saharan African
nations have qualified for preferential treatment regarding U.S. tariffs
under the African Growth and Opportunity Act. (AGOA). The annual
designation signifies that these countries are making progress in
specific economic and social areas, and are thus entitled to greater
access to U.S. markets. The Gambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo
are new additions to the list of eligible countries. View

USTR
Report on WTO Compliance in China.
China has made
"significant progress" in fulfilling its obligations as a new WTO member, according to a USTR report
to Congress, "although much is left to do." The report noted
that compliance problems often stem from "a lack of effective or
uniform application of China's WTO commitments at local and provincial
levels." USTR found four areas which warrant "continued U.S.
scrutiny: "Transparency, agriculture, intellectual property rights,
and services.
