The Basics of Importing hosted by the Maine International Trade Center teaches importers: tools of the trade, sourcing efficiently, logistics and legal and business essentials of importing.  Topics to be covered include import terms of purchase, financing options, qualifying potential suppliers, preparing product and paperwork for customs as well as avoiding risk, litigation and criminal exposure.  This seminar, the fifth program in the Citizens Bank International Trade Education Series, will be held on January 16 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Maine International Trade Center on 511 Congress Street.  Cost is $50.00 for members and $90.00 for non-members of the Maine International Trade Center and free to all Maine state legislators.  For more information contact Catherine G. Futurallia 2003, May 21-23, 2003 in Quebec City. The Maine International Trade Center is recruiting for Futurallia 2003, one of the world’s preeminent matchmaking events for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). 800 companies from around the world are expected to attend the 2003 event in Quebec.  Targeted industry sectors include most types of manufacturing, wood processing and building materials, environmental and information technologies; food and agriculture; and healthcare.  This is an excellent opportunity for Maine firms to develop export markets and to learn about the international marketplace. CeBIT 2003, Germany, March 12-19, 2003, in Hannover, is the largest and most influential international information and communication technology trade show in the world, with over 139,000 distributors from 100 countries. The Maine International Trade Center, through our affiliation with the Eastern Trade Council (ETC), is offering booth space to Maine companies for $1500.  Companies can display catalogs and products, with international trade specialists on hand to ensure continuous coverage for booth. This fee will provide your company with a catalog exhibit in the ETC booth; 2 exhibitor badges; access to the USA pavilion lounge; and on-site translation services.  Companies are responsible for their individual travel and expenses.  Participation and exhibit space are limited. Free Trade Agreement with USA/Singapore.  The United States and Singapore have reached “agreement in substance" on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), according to a fact sheet released by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR).  Once the FTA goes into effect, the United States will lower any tariffs on Singapore goods to zero. Under the agreement, Singapore commits to enacting a competition law and to ensuring that its government enterprises "will act as commercial entities, will not discriminate against U.S. goods and services, and will not engage in anti-competitive behavior," according to the USTR fact sheet. 38 Sub-Saharan Countries Certified for U.S. Tariff Preferences.  On January 4, the White House announced that 38 Sub-Saharan African nations have qualified for preferential treatment regarding U.S. tariffs under the African Growth and Opportunity Act. (AGOA). The annual designation signifies that these countries are making progress in specific economic and social areas, and are thus entitled to greater access to U.S. markets. The Gambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo are new additions to the list of eligible countries.  View the complete text of the report (includes text of White House announcement)

Environmental Business Council of Maine Forum "R&D Opportunities with UMaine."   The Environmental Business Council of Maine (EBCM) resumes its Forum series on Wednesday, January 15th featuring a presentation by Chet Rock Ph.D., P.E., on the research and development opportunities at the University of Maine for the environmental and energy technology sector.  Areas of discussion will include sensors to detect E. coli, generic sensors to protect surface water supplies, impact of MtBE on ground water, and disposal of biosolids. iEX Internet Expo 2003, February 5-7 in Zurich, Switzerland is the Swiss trade show focusing exclusively on the Internet and its applications in business. iEX attracts more than 40,000 visitors and 4,500 conference attendees. Medical Device Trade Mission, Mar. 23 - April 3, 2003 Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore. This trade mission will have both policy and commercial components to assist U.S. Medical device firms seeking to enhance their presence in the region.  The mission will focus on the medical/dental device and clinical laboratory equipment sectors.  A limited number of firms from health care services as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries also could participate.  Companies are encouraged to participate in all four countries, but participants have the option of selecting stops from the itinerary. 2002 Retail Industry White Paper Issued:  The China General Chamber of Commerce issued its 2002 Retail Industry White Paper.  According to statistics, supply exceeded demand for 80% of consumer goods in 2001. The top 100 chain stores reported a sales volume of USD19.7 billion, up 48% from the previous year.  The number of stores increased 56% while the number of employees increased 63%.   (Source: International Finance News, 12/16/2002 - Translated by Nancy Xu, USDOC)

University of Maine offers French for Business Course: ORONO – The course  is designed to develop the skills necessary for working and conducting business in francophone communities throughout the world. This an intermediate level language course open to the public. It is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at the University of Maine in Room 220 Little Hall, from 3:40-4:55pm. USTR Report on WTO Compliance in China. China has made "significant progress" in fulfilling its obligations as a new WTO member, according to a USTR report to Congress, "although much is left to do." The report noted that compliance problems often stem from "a lack of effective or uniform application of China's WTO commitments at local and provincial levels."
