Food & Beverage Export Seminar: Cuban Opportunities and Marketing Funds June 5, 2003, presented by the Maine International Trade Center. Recent changes affecting the U.S.-Cuba trade relationship have opened this growing market to U.S. food and beverage exporters. This seminar will identify opportunities, procedures and difficulties in exporting to Cuba. China  Extends Deadline to Convert CCIB and CCEE Certificates  to August 1, 2003 China 's Certification and Accreditation Administration (CNCA) has announced that the deadline for mandatory conversion of CCIB and CCEE Certificates to the new CCC Certificate will be extended to August 1, 2003 . Iraq Reconstruction Information for US Companies: The "Iraq Reconstruction Task Force" is comprised of experts throughout the Department dedicated to assisting in the Iraq rebuilding efforts.  The goal is to provide U.S. companies with the latest information on the reconstruction efforts and the related projects that they can participate in.  1. EU: Workshop on Compliance with EU Data Protection Requirements,
Redwood Shores , CA , June 2, 2003 . The European Union (EU)’s Directive on Data Protection prohibits the transfer of personal data to non-European Union nations that do not meet the European “adequacy” standard for privacy protection.  The US ,  has taken a sector-specific approach that relies on a mix of legislation, regulation, and self-regulation to protect privacy related to data transmission.  To bridge these different privacy approaches the U.S. Department of Commerce developed the Safe Harbor framework, approved by the EU in June 2000, as a way for U.S. companies to avoid experiencing interruptions in business dealings with companies in the EU or adverse action by European data authorities. IRAQ : Reconstruction of Iraq : Bringing the Global Community Together, June 17, 2003 --The conflict in Iraq has created an urgent need to rebuild infrastructure and restore essential services within the country. Returning Iraq to the world economy will be a priority for post-war Iraq reconstruction. In a May 9 address at the University of South Carolina, President Bush outlined a plan to create a U.S.-Middle East Free Trade Area within a decade, To bring the Middle East into an expanding circle of opportunity, to provide hope for the people who live in that region." Building on the U.S.  FTAs with Israel and Jordan , the U.S. will take a series of graduated steps which include: helping reforming countries become WTO members; negotiating Bilateral Investment Treaties and Trade and Investment Framework Agreements with governments determined to improve their trade and investment regimes; and completing negotiations with Morocco on an FTA by the end of this year. Development of China Trade: The US Commerce Department’s Trade Compliance Center has released, a report titled ”Development of China Trade 1995-2002.” Through this period, exports increased $177 billion, and Chinese imports and exports more than doubled. In 1999, the U.S. became China’s largest export market. The U.S. currently purchases slightly over 21 percent of China’s exports.
