Food & Beverage Export Seminar: Cuban Opportunities and Marketing Funds June 5, 2003, presented by the Maine International Trade Center. Recent changes affecting the U.S.-Cuba trade relationship have opened this growing market to U.S. food and beverage exporters. This seminar will identify opportunities, procedures and difficulties in exporting to Cuba. There will also be a review of the marketing monies available to food exporters through Food Export USA's "Branded" program.  This seminar, the eighth in the Citizen's Bank International Trade Education Series, will be held on June 5, 2003 from 10:00am-12:00pm at Shipyard Brewing Company in Portland.  Cost is $30.00 for members and $60.00 for non-members of the Maine International Trade Center and free to all Maine State Legislators.  For more information contact Dana Eidsness at eidsness@mitc.com or (207)541-7474.

Irish Trade Mission Reception featuring Senator George Mitchell : On July 7th, Senator George Mitchell will be joining the Maine International Trade Center at the Mariott, Sable Oaks-South Portland from 4:30-7:00 pm for a kickoff reception of the upcoming Gubernatorial Trade Mission to Ireland/Northern Ireland.  An overview of current events and Irish business opportunities will be discussed. MITC INTERN SPOTLIGHT

MITC is fortunate to host Sureyya Mahmutoglu as a Research Associate.  Sureyya was born in Istanbul, Turkey and holds law degrees from Istanbul University School of Law (L.L.B.) and an L.L.M. degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, New Hampshire. She has been living in the U.S. for four years.  Sureyya is an excellent business liaison for Maine companies wanting to enter the Turkish market.  At the conclusion of her internship, she hopes to find a position at a firm or company where she can combine her legal education and the knowledge she has gained at the Trade Center to practice Intellectual Property and International Law. WHO changes Hong Kong , Guangdong Travel Recommendations Effective May23, the World Health Organization (WHO) has removed its recommendation that people should postpone all but essential travel to Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Guangdong province, China . The recommendation to consider postponing all but essential travel to Hong Kong and Guangdong was issued on 2 April in order to minimize the international spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). China  Extends Deadline to Convert CCIB and CCEE Certificates  to August 1, 2003 China 's Certification and Accreditation Administration (CNCA) has announced that the deadline for mandatory conversion of CCIB and CCEE Certificates to the new CCC Certificate will be extended to August 1, 2003 . IRAQ : Iraq Reconstruction Task Force Launches Web Site : On April 25, the Iraq Reconstruction Task Force officially launched its web site, www.export.gov/iraq.  This site offers information about procurement opportunities, contract awards, and government agency information for Iraq .

EU: Workshop on Compliance with EU Data Protection Requirements,
Redwood Shores , CA , June 2, 2003 . The European Union (EU)’s Directive on Data Protection prohibits the transfer of personal data to non-European Union nations that do not meet the European “adequacy” standard for privacy protection.  The US ,  has taken a sector-specific approach that relies on a mix of legislation, regulation, and self-regulation to protect privacy related to data transmission.  To bridge these different privacy approaches the U.S. Department of Commerce developed the Safe Harbor framework, approved by the EU in June 2000, as a way for U.S. companies to avoid experiencing interruptions in business dealings with companies in the EU or adverse action by European data authorities. Afghanistan Reconstruction Conference in Chicago , IL , June 8-10 The U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency are organizing a major Afghanistan reconstruction conference held June 8-10 in Chicago that offers opportunities for U.S. ICT companies that are interested in rebuilding Afghanistan . China to Invest RMB 2 Billion for the Construction of New Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. According to Chinese officials attending the 56th World Health Organization (WHO) conference in Geneva , the Chinese government is planning construction of a large scale Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The new Center will be based on the existing one, but will be an expanded and strengthened facility, more magnificent in scale and more advanced in technology.  The Chinese government is planning to invest RMB 2 billion (USD 242 million) and construction will be complete before 2008. China ’s Vice Premier and current Minister of Health, Madam Wu Yi, introduced this plan to the U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health during their meeting.  The Secretary expressed that the United States would provide technical assistance to China in building the new center.
