Driving up municipal road quality in Serbia
The European Union is to provide nearly €5 million to help finance repairs to the crumbling road network in and around the northern Serbian town of Vrsac, it announced in August. The project is part of a larger EU-backed effort to improve municipal infrastructure across Serbia, using a combination of government funds, bank loans and grants from EU resources. Serbia's Minister of Public Administration and Local Government, Zoran Loncar, said the road repair was a timely venture for Vrsac, which is expected to co-host the World Basketball Championship later this year. The European Agency for Reconstruction, which co-manages the project with Serbia’s Municipal Infrastructure Agency, has managed a portfolio of nearly €1 billion in EU funds since the fall of the Milosevic regime.

EU to help upgrade Belgrade's infrastructure
The European Union has announced new funding of €3 million to improve the provision of municipal services in Belgrade. The money will be used to help the local authorities manage key infrastructure projects to ensure efficient and professional use of all investment. Expertise will be provided by EU-funded local and international experts, and the project should help attract further internationally infrastructure investments in the city.

The Center will work with both the companies and the consular officers, when needed, to communicate information effectively between U.S businesses and the embassies and consulates worldwide. UMaine Students Explore International Marketing Challenges and Opportunities
Students at the University of Maine School of Business (Orono) will be exploring the challenges and opportunities of international marketing this semester in a project titled "Made in Maine". Teams of students will be doing extensive country market studies and developing preliminary marketing plans using products and services offered by Maine-based companies. The project is designed to give students an appreciation of the many factors involved with international marketing efforts, affording them the opportunity to apply concepts and information in a real world situation. The course will help students understand the significance of international marketing and its growing impact on and potential for Maine-based companies.

Paul Myer, the course instructor, has been an international marketing executive for major corporations. He is looking for member companies or individuals who would be interested in assisting the student teams with their projects. While students will be initiating contact with some companies, if you are willing to offer students some assistance - for example, agreeing to a telephone or on-line interview, providing them with some product marketing documentation, or other such assistance - your participation and support would greatly enhance this experience. The student teams are also looking for volunteers to sit on panels of executives that will review their final project oral presentations. Contact Paul at paul.myer@maine.edu or 207.712.4556.
