CeBIT 2003, Germany, March 12-19, 2003, in Hannover, is the largest and most influential international information and communication technology trade show in the world, with over 139,000 distributors from 100 countries. The Maine International Trade Center, through our affiliation with the Eastern Trade Council (ETC), is offering booth space to Maine companies for $1500.  Companies can display catalogs and products, with international trade specialists on hand to ensure continuous coverage for booth. This fee will provide your company with a catalog exhibit in the ETC booth; 2 exhibitor badges; access to the USA pavilion lounge; and on-site translation services.  Companies are responsible for their individual travel and expenses.  Participation and exhibit space are limited. Futurallia 2003, May 21-23, 2003 in Quebec City. The Maine International Trade Center is recruiting for Futurallia 2003, one of the world’s preeminent matchmaking events for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). 800 companies from around the world are expected to attend the 2003 event in Quebec.  Targeted industry sectors include most types of manufacturing, wood processing and building materials, environmental and information technologies; food and agriculture; and healthcare.  This is an excellent opportunity for Maine firms to develop export markets and to learn about the international marketplace. Trade Alerts

UK Strike averted: A series of one-day strikes targeting seven UK airports over the Christmas holiday has been averted.  The Transport and General Workers Union and BAA have announced that they had reached an agreement over pay, following late night talks. The agreement meant that no strike action will take place and air passenger travel plans over Christmas will not be disrupted.

iEX Internet Expo 2003, February 5-7 in Zurich, Switzerland is the Swiss trade show focusing exclusively on the Internet and its applications in business. iEX attracts more than 40,000 visitors and 4,500 conference attendees. Medical Device Trade Mission, Mar. 23 - April 3, 2003 Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore. This trade mission will have both policy and commercial components to assist U.S. Medical device firms seeking to enhance their presence in the region.  The mission will focus on the medical/dental device and clinical laboratory equipment sectors.  A limited number of firms from health care services as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries also could participate.  Companies are encouraged to participate in all four countries, but participants have the option of selecting stops from the itinerary. WTO Proposal Would Eliminate Tariffs on Industrial and Consumer Goods
by 2015 On November 26, The United States announced an ambitious new proposal calling on members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to eliminate all tariffs on consumer and industrial goods by 2015.
This proposal, combined with the U.S. agricultural reform proposal, submitted to the WTO in July, would eliminate tariffs on the nearly $6 trillion in annual world goods trade. See: http://www.ustr.gov/new/Zero_Tariff.htm 

U.S. and Chile Conclude Historic Free Trade Agreement. The United States and Chile reached agreement today on an historic and comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) designed to strip away barriers and facilitate trade and investment between both countries. U.S. Trade Representative Robert B. Zoellick and ChileanForeign Minister Soledad Alvear said they expect to sign the Agreement and submit it to their Congresses for approval next year. University of Maine offers French for Business Course: ORONO – The course  is designed to develop the skills necessary for working and conducting business in francophone communities throughout the world. This an intermediate level language course open to the public. It is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at the University of Maine in Room 220 Little Hall, from 3:40-4:55pm. WTO Upholds U.S. Provisions Against Unfair Steel Subsidies.
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative announced November 28 that the WTO Appellate Body has rejected a challenge by the EU and upheld key provisions of a U.S. trade law that provides a remedy against unfairly subsidized imports. The case involved subsidized steel from Germany. USTR Zoellick said the WTO decision was a victory not only for the U.S., but for the multilateral trading system. Biotech venture capital growing in Japanese "bio-clusters." The Japanese market for the goods and services of biotechnology is expected to grow from about 1.5 trillion yen ($12 billion) in 2002 to about 2 trillion yen ($16 billion) in 2005. Biotech associations report that more than 300 bioventures have started up. With rapid growth projected in the years to come, more ventures are coming into being and selling shares on stock exchanges.
