Biotechnology in the Global Marketplace featuring Warren Cook and Richard Seline: Warren Cook, President of JAX Research Systems, will speak on The Jackson Laboratory’s recent experience expanding their markets into Asia & Europe.  JAX Research Systems took the unusual step of partnering with their direct competitor for the purpose of expanding international sales.  Richard Seline, of New Economy Strategies, will outline international markets Maine companies should target for the future, and how collaboration between government, private corporations and academic institutions leads to success.  Join MITC as we learn how JAX Research Systems is expanding their international sales and distribution in Europe and Asia; how the University of Ulster is contributing to their own cluster development through business incubation and how the International Northeast Biotechnology Corridor can draw on its regional strengths to enhance cluster development in Maine. The program will run from 2-5 pm on Wednesday, December 4th at MITC, 511 Congress Street, Portland. CE Marking: Preparing your goods for the European market.  CE marking is a mandatory legal requirement for many products sold in Europe.  This seminar teaches manufacturers and suppliers how to comply with the essential requirements of CE Marking.  Topics to be covered include quality control, product assessment, protection requirements as well as the preparation of documents.  The program, the third program in the Citizens Bank International Trade Education Series, will be held on November 19, 2002 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Maine International Trade Center on 511 Congress Street.  Cost is $35.00 for members and $50.00 for non-members of the Maine International Trade Center and free to all legislators.  For more information contact Catherine G. UPS Introduces Standard Service from the Americas: On January 6, 2003, providing general door-to-door, day-definite delivery to the 48 contiguous states from the following origins: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and Honduras. 

Transit times will be 4-9 business days depending on destination.  Customers can receive specific transit times via the Transit Time generator on the UPS Web site, or by calling 1-800-PICK-UPS.  The service is primarily designed to meet the needs of high-volume shippers and with as an economical alternative to large consolidated clearance shipments to the 48 contiguous states.  For more information see the UPS Web site at www.ups.com.

FTZ Boot Camp:  January 5-6, 2003 in Orlando, Florida. Comdex Las Vegas: November 18-21, 2002. Hemispheric Trade Ministers Set Schedule for Advancing FTAA: on November 1, 2002, trade ministers from the first Summit of the Americas, composed of the presidents of the Western Hemisphere's 34 democratic nations convened in Quito, Ecuador, to continue their efforts to create a hemispheric free trade zone by 2005 that will comprise more than 800 million consumers. At the conclusion of the Quito ministerial, the trade ministers released a 40-point declaration that outlines the objectives and importance of the FTAA. Read the Complete News item

The Gulf of Maine Research Laboratory: The Environmental Business Council of Maine (EBCM) resumes its Forum series on Wednesday, November 20th featuring a presentation on the Gulf of Maine Research Laboratory by Donald Perkins, President of the Gulf of Maine Aquarium. Comments on Proposed Free Trade Agreements Requested: USDOC and USTR are advising members of the Industry Sector and Industry Functional Advisory Committees (ISACs/IFACs) of the upcoming USTR public hearings and requests for comments on the proposed Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with Central America and Morocco. On October 1, USTR Zoellick notified Congress that the President intends to initiate these two FTAs.  Written comments are due by Monday, November 25, 2002 for Morocco, and by Monday, December 2, 2002 for Central America.  View text of memo to ISACs and IFACs
