International Markets For Information Technology:
The Maine International Trade Center and Fairchild Semiconductor have gathered together international trade and legal professionals in the IT sector to discuss the differences between foreign and U.S. patent law, international licensing issues and the best methods of identifying and managing international distributors and agents.  The program will be held on September 24, 2002 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Fairchild Semiconductor on 82 Running Hill Rd. The Economic Outlook: Bleakhouse Or Great Expectations?  Jeremy A. Peat, Group Chief Economist of The Royal Bank of Scotland, will share his thoughts on the U.S. and global economy from  7:30 a.m.  to 9:00 a.m. Thursday, September 26 at the Portland Marriott at Sable Oaks in South Portland. The Fashion Forum Will Be Held In Leon Guanajuato: Sept 30 to Oct 3 2002. The Consulate of Mexico in Boston informs that the “Apparel Fashion Forum,” specialized exhibition of the fashion industry, organized by the World Trade Commission of the state of Guanajuato (COFOCE) will be held in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico from September 30th to Octuber 3rd, 2002.  The main goal of the Fashion Forum is to present business sourcing opportunities in the State of Guanajuato for the fashion industry. APEC AgBiotech Public-Private Partnership Forum: September 18-19, 2002 Guadalajara, Mexico.  The theme for this two-day forum is "Creating the Future and Disabling the Barriers: The APEC Food System and New Food Technologies." The Forum is designed to open a discussion about new AgBiotech initiatives and public-private cooperation in this sector to present at APEC Leaders meeting in Cabo San Lucas in October 2002. Information Communications Technology Forum (ICT): Amman, Jordan, Sept 30-Oct 1.  The Ministry of Information Communications and Technology (MOICT) and the Information Technology Association of Jordan (INTAJ) are hosting the forum at the Grand Hyatt. The forum will highlight opportunities for foreign investors in Jordan's growing ICT industry, showcase the country's USAID-Assisted Reach initiative, a national strategy for developing the ICT sector, and promulgate assessments of the sector's progress to date. Headlining this year's conference is Craig Barrett, President and CEO of Intel Corporation. Techno Business Forum 2003: Application Deadline is 10-15-02. Korea Electronics Show (KES) 2002: Seoul, Korea, Oct. 8-12, 2002. The Commercial Service of the U.S. Embassy in Korea is recruiting U.S. exporters of electronics products to display product literature/catalogs in their Multimedia Catalog Showcase Booth. KES is the largest exhibition in Korea for consumer and industrial electronics and electronic parts and components. Tecno Internet - Softel 2002 International Trade Show: Santiago, Chile, Oct. 9-11, 2002. Telecommunications/Information. SMAU IT And Telecom Show:  Milan, Oct. 24-28, 2002.  Italy is the fourth largest IT market in western Europe, SMAU is the #1 information technology and telecommunications show in Italy, second in the region only to CeBIT.  SMAU allows you to target the Italian market, and is also a gateway to the emerging markets in southern and central Europe.  In 2001 SMAU attracted over 2,500 exhibitors and over 450,000 visitors. Business Development Trade Mission: Nov. 12-15. Donald Evans will lead a senior-level Business Development trade mission to Accra, Ghana and Johannesburg, South Africa November 12-15, 2002.  The delegation will include approximately 15 U.S.-based executives of small, medium, and large U.S. firms from the information technology, telecommunications, clean energy and environmental technology, medical products, and construction equipment and services business sectors. Participants will develop contacts within the Ghanaian and south African government, as well as meet with potential business partners. Business Development Trade Mission: Dec 2-6. Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans will lead a trade mission to Lima, Peru and Santiago, Chile focusing on information and communication technologies, energy, services, machinery and equipment.  The participation fee for the trade mission will be $6,000 - $8000 per company. The Mission is intended to assist individual U.S. companies pursue export and other new business opportunities in Peru, Chile and the Andean Region, by introducing them potential business partners. Information Security Trade Mission: Oct. 28 - Nov. 1, 2002. The total European market for security products will more than triple from $1.8 billion in 2000 to $6.2 billion in 2005. Given this fast-growing market, the Software & Information Industry Association and Michelle O’Neill, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Information Technology Industries at the U.S. Department of Commerce, are co-leading an Information Security Trade Mission to Brussels, Paris, and Amsterdam from October 28-November 1.  The mission will feature market briefings, tailored one-on-one meetings for each participating company, and networking events at each stop. IT Trade Mission:, Nov. 4-7, 2002.  The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA) and the U.S. Department of Commerce will lead an IT trade mission to Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara, Mexico on November 4-7, 2002. The mission is open to U.S. companies that develop computer software, produce hardware and telecommunications equipment, and provide systems integration, Internet services, and E-commerce applications. International Business Seminar Series leading to a Graduate Certificate in International Business, a joint program of the William S. Cohen Center for International Policy and Commerce at the University of Maine and the Maine International Trade Center. Classes Begin Fall 2002, Portland. 

Module 1: International Business: The framework, provides a framework for the analysis of problems and opportunities related to establishing, conducting, and maintaining business activities in foreign markets.  October 4,5, 18,19, 25,26. November 1,2.  

Module 2:  International Finance, presents a comprehensive overview of the components of international finance including the international monetary system, foreign exchange markets and risk; managing foreign exchange risk including use of options and swaps; and capital budgeting and foreign direct investment. Dates: November 15,16,22,23, December 6,7, 13,14.

Module 3: International Management and Strategy, looks at the strategies and structures of the Multinational Corporation and analyzes differences in management cultures in various regions of the world.  Components for successful internationalization of a firm are also discussed.

Module 4: International Marketing. Focus is on identifying and analyzing the attractiveness of foreign markets, choosing an entry strategy, and identifying a target market.  Participants will create a marketing plan.  Comparisons of culture and negotiation styles between countries are also examined.

Module 5: International Logistics.  Examines the key elements in choosing distribution channels for reaching foreign markets.  Looks at logistics from the perspectives of market entry strategy, sourcing strategy, market development, and modal choice.

International Human Resource Development Course through Maine Maritime Academy.  October 15 - November 15, 2002. MWF 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. To be taught on site in Castine, Me OR through an interactive distance location at Bath Iron Works in Bath.  This course focuses on development and management of human resources (HR) in an international environment.  Students examine how culture and experience affect work practices within organizations. Topics include: Organizational Analysis Recruitment, Selection, Hiring, Employment Practices Compensation (Including Rewards, Incentives, and Benefits), Contemporary Issues in IHRM such as Labor Relations, Approaches to Diversity Management and Training, International Performance Management, and Integrative Casework. Students may take the entire course for 3 graduate credits and a Certificate or individual units for CEU credits. Penobscot School Announces New Academic Plan: Starting with the Fall 2002 semester, Penobscot School is embarking on a plan to improve the quality of teaching and learning in its foreign language courses. Under the direction newly appointed Acting Academic Director Sally Burtnette-Leser, Exchange Teachers will be team-teaching his or her class with a local Host Teacher. The Host Teacher provides the knowledge of the American educational system and models appropriate teaching methods whilst the Exchange Teacher is the expert in the language and culture of his or her country, providing the richness of information and practice, leading conversations and modeling correct syntax, grammar and vocabulary in context. Co-Teachers learn from each other, and the real beneficiaries are the students. Courses in a total of nine languages begin the week of September 23. Scholarships are available through a grant from United Mid-Coast Charities for students ages 18 and under. New Export IT Reports Released: New reports on the information technology, telecommunications, and e-commerce markets in Argentina, Brazil, Central Europe, and Mexico have been released.
