The Economic Outlook: Bleakhouse Or Great Expectations? Jeremy A. The Consulate of Mexico in Boston informs that the “Apparel
Fashion Forum,” specialized exhibition of the fashion industry,
organized by the World Trade Commission of the state of Guanajuato (COFOCE)
will be held in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico from September 30th
to Octuber 3rd, 2002. The
main goal of the Fashion Forum is to present business sourcing
opportunities in the State of Guanajuato for the fashion industry.
Attendees will have pre-arranged meetings with Mexican clothing
manufacturers, and the opportunity to increase their sales, branding,
and make new contacts from Mexico and abroad.

20. APEC AgBiotech Public-Private Partnership Forum: September 18-19, 2002 Guadalajara, Mexico. The Commercial Service of the U.S. Embassy in Korea is recruiting U.S.
exporters of electronics products to display product literature/catalogs
in their Multimedia Catalog Showcase Booth. KES is the largest
exhibition in Korea for consumer and industrial electronics and
electronic parts and components. Korea is a major importer of industrial
electronic equipment, communications equipment, related components
including semiconductors (non-memory), and solutions.
Korea’s total imports of electronics equipment and components
are forecast to reach a value of U.S. $39 billion in 2002.
KES 2002, which is expected to draw over 170,000 visitors, will

Dec 2-6. Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans
will lead a trade mission to Lima, Peru and Santiago, Chile focusing on
information and communication technologies, energy, services, machinery
and equipment. The
participation fee for the trade mission will be $6,000 - $8000 per
company. The Mission is intended to assist individual U.S. companies
pursue export and other new business opportunities in Peru, Chile and
the Andean Region, by introducing them potential business partners.

Business Seminar Series leading to a Graduate Certificate in
International Business, a joint program of the William S. Cohen
Center for International Policy and Commerce at the University of

1: International
Business: The framework, provides
a framework for the analysis of problems and opportunities related to
establishing, conducting, and maintaining business activities in foreign
markets. October 4,5,

2:
International Finance, presents
a comprehensive overview of the components of international finance
including the international monetary system, foreign exchange markets
and risk; managing foreign exchange risk including use of options and
swaps; and capital budgeting and foreign direct investment. Dates:
November 15,16,22,23, December 6,7, 13,14. Module 3: International Management and Strategy, looks at the strategies and structures of the Multinational Corporation and analyzes differences in management cultures in various regions of the world. Components for successful internationalization of a firm are also discussed. Module 4:
International Marketing. Focus is on identifying and analyzing the
attractiveness of foreign markets, choosing an entry strategy, and
identifying a target market. Participants
will create a marketing plan. Comparisons
of culture and negotiation styles between countries are also examined. Module
5: International Logistics. Examines the key elements in choosing distribution channels
for reaching foreign markets. Looks
at logistics from the perspectives of market entry strategy, sourcing

Development Course
through Maine Maritime Academy.
October 15 - November 15, 2002. MWF 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. To be taught
on site in Castine, Me OR through an interactive distance location at

course focuses on development and management of human resources (HR) in
an international environment. Students
examine how culture and experience affect work practices within
organizations. Topics

Employment Practices Compensation (Including Rewards, Incentives, and
Benefits), Contemporary Issues in IHRM such as Labor Relations,
Approaches to Diversity Management and Training, International

entire course for 3 graduate credits and a Certificate or individual

School Announces New Academic Plan: Starting with the Fall 2002
semester, Penobscot School is embarking on a plan to improve the quality
of teaching and learning in its foreign language courses. Under the
direction newly appointed Acting Academic Director Sally Burtnette-Leser,
Exchange Teachers will be team-teaching his or her class with a local
Host Teacher. The Host Teacher provides the knowledge of the American
educational system and models appropriate teaching methods whilst the
Exchange Teacher is the expert in the language and culture of his or her
country, providing the richness of information and practice, leading
conversations and modeling correct syntax, grammar and vocabulary in
context. Co-Teachers learn from each other, and the real beneficiaries
are the students. Courses in a total of nine languages begin the week of
September 23. Scholarships are
available through a grant from United Mid-Coast Charities for students
