Industry Expertise: Education
With over 1,200 international students at Maine’s colleges and universities, and an estimated 500 more studying at high schools and academies, educational services are an important and expanding segment of the state’s export mix. In 2009, more than $30 million was spent by these students in their local economies, bringing jobs and diversity to all areas of the state.

The Maine International Trade Center (MITC) began a focus on recruiting foreign students in 2008, and officially launched the StudyMaine consortium in 2010 with the purpose of promoting the state as a place to study, live, and work. In 2011, the state will lead the first StudyMaine mission to South Korea.

StudyMaine is a MITC initiative to jointly market the state's secondary and higher education institutions. StudyMaine will coordinate overseas events and educational seminars, and work with schools to attract more foreign students to institutions statewide, from high schools to colleges and universities. StudyMaine.net is an interactive web portal directory of Maine schools and the many programs they offer. The site is targeted to international students, parents, and agents.

"My participation with the Turkey Trade Mission was one of the more profitable trips I've been on since working in Admissions at Maine Central Institute (MCI). MCI has traveled to 11 countries, some multiple times, in the last 2 years and after just 5 days in Turkey we have already reaped the rewards of partnerships and potential students."
