South Korea and Japan Trade Mission

Oct. 27 – Nov. 3, 2007
South Korea and Japan are Maine's 5th and 4th largest exports markets and both demand high quality U.S. products and services. The 2007 Trade Mission was the first gubernatorial-level visit to Asia since Governor Angus King traveled to Taiwan and Hong Kong in 1999. It focused on generating new sales for companies, increasing foreign student enrollment for Maine schools and colleges, and bringing more tourism and investment to the state.

Industry representatives participated in over 100 matchmaking meetings while in South Korea and Japan. These sessions were organized by the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service and FoodExport in-country staff. Local industry experts in each sector worked for weeks to prescreen potential customers for the Maine businesses and organizations.

The education sector was particularly well represented, as many students from Japan and South Korea come to the U.S. to for preparatory school or university studies. Delegates from the seafood, agriculture, wood pulp, landscaping machinery, IT, logistics, law, consumer goods, building products and window industries have estimated $3 million in projected sales as a result of the Trade Mission.
